8:45 AM
I arrive at the office, set up my desk, and get organised for the day ahead. Working in the Litigation team means things move quickly and no two days are the same. I start by checking my emails, reviewing anything flagged from the previous day, and preparing a draft to-do list to prioritise my tasks.
9:00 AM
It’s everyone’s favourite day of the month: The Addisons Roll. The whole firm comes together to enjoy sausage rolls, cake, and plenty of sweet treats while the Partners share updates on key matters and what’s happening across the firm. It’s the perfect mix of good food and staying in the loop.
9:30 AM
I began working on my first task – preparing a brief for a new matter for a significant commercial client. This involves reviewing documents, organising evidence, and ensuring everything is structured clearly and concisely for Counsel.
10:45 AM
After completing and compiling the brief, I take a quick walk through the city to deliver the documents to Counsel at their chambers.
11:30 AM
Back at the office, I prepare a first draft of an Affidavit for one of our clients using templates for guidance. This involves setting out the relevant facts, presenting the evidence clearly, and aligning the content with the overall strategy of the matter. I also cross-check key documents to ensure accuracy and consistency. It’s reassuring to know my work will be reviewed, and I value the opportunity to refine my drafting with feedback from senior lawyers.
1:00 PM
Lunch is always a highlight. Although the graduate cohort is spread across different floors, we make an effort to meet up. Today we are heading to the Pitt Street Mall food court for a quick reset and catch-up.
2:00 PM
In the afternoon, I assist on a complex commercial disputes matter. I carry out targeted legal research on the factors relevant to determining an application for leave to proceed against a bankrupt – building on my exposure to insolvency matters during this rotation. I locate relevant authorities and summarise my findings in a clear, concise research memo.
4:30 PM
Order popcorn and bean bags! I’m on the firm’s Social Committee and helping organise our next event: Addisons Movie Night. These events are a great way for graduates to get involved an connect with colleagues across the firm.
4:45 PM
I help collate materials and evidence for a hearing at the Supreme Court of NSW scheduled for tomorrow. A senior lawyer briefs me on the matter, walking me through the key issues, arguments, and hearing strategy so I feel prepared to attend court with them in the morning.
