EGR Global drew on Addisons expertise for the Australian online gambling sector feature published in the latest edition of EGR Intel.
Partner Jamie Nettleton spoke to journalist Melanie Dayasena-Lowe about the current state of the online gambling sector in Australia and how online betting operators have fared during the pandemic.
The feature, which can be read in full here, offers an in-depth exploration of the many ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted online gambling in Australia, touching on the strong performance of horseracing, the impact of retail closures, advertising restrictions and regulatory issues such as the complexity of regulating illegal offshore gambling websites and the slow roll out of the National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Wagering (NCPF).
Jamie pointed to inconsistencies and uncertainties surrounding the NCPF as a key issue for Australian online bettering operators, saying;
“Essentially, every offer needs to be reviewed closely and continuously to ensure it doesn’t constitute an inducement because more clarity is being given as each month passes. For example, what is price, what is product and what is an inducement? It’s a pretty blurry distinction.”
