Richard works with clients from a broad range of sectors with a particular focus on media and intellectual property.

As a litigator, he advises clients on all issues relating to publication of content from pre-publication clearances covering defamation, contempt, copyright, privacy and reporting restrictions across all media platforms including press, television, radio, internet and social media. He also provides advice on the whole range of issues that arise post-publication including when disputes become litigious.

Richard has a particular depth of knowledge of the media industry and has acted in proceedings in courts throughout Australia (both civil and criminal jurisdictions) as well as proceedings conducted by regulatory and investigative bodies such as the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) and various criminal and coronial investigations.

Media publishers

provide regular advice to a range of media publishers including Seven West Media, Australian Associated Press and Australian News Channel (Sky News) on pre-publication issues involving defamation, contempt, copyright and compliance with various publication Codes of Conduct. I also act for those media clients in disputes arising from the content published by them.

Online bookmakers

act for several online bookmaking companies in regulatory disputes regarding their advertising and promotional materials.

Seven West Media

act for Seven West Media in a range of litigation matters affecting the property, intellectual property and reputation of Seven West Media, including its various media interests. Most recently, I acted in proceedings against a former employee who had defrauded Seven of $7 million using fake invoices. Seven successfully applied to the Supreme Court of NSW to freeze the employee’s funds and then brought proceedings for repayment of the funds.

Social Media advice

advise various high profile media personalities and well-known brands in response to misuse of their content and reputation management issues generally. I have been successful in responding quickly to critical risk matters by using a combination of legal and commercial strategies to protect my clients’ reputations.
