Review of the Racing and Betting Act
The Northern Territory (NT) is the leading jurisdiction in Australia for the licensing and conduct of online gambling businesses.
The NT conducted a review in 2018 of the Racing and Betting Act 1983 (NT) (the RBA) with the objective of ensuring that the current legislative framework is suitable for current and emerging industry practices and needs (the Review).
A report on the Review (the Report) was sent on 17 December 2019, by the NT Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Hon Natasha Fyles MLA, to various stakeholders for comment. Feedback is requested by 16 March 2020.
The Report recognises that the current regulatory regime, as set out in the RBA and the Gaming Control Act 1993 (NT), is outdated and substantial changes are required to ensure that the regulatory regime in the NT for the licensing and conduct of online gambling is “fit for purpose” and closer to best practice. We agree.
